Gellae Application Mistakes That Cause Early Lifting (And How to Fix Them)

If your last set started lifting after a few days instead of lasting a couple of weeks, you're not doing anything wrong on purpose — it's almost always one small, fixable step in the application process. Here are the most common culprits, and exactly how to fix each one.

Mistake 1: skipping nail prep

This is the number one cause of early lifting. Any trace of natural oil, lotion or moisture on your nail plate creates a barrier between your nail and the adhesive, so the gellae never fully bonds in the first place. Fix: give your nails a proper clean and light buff immediately before application, and avoid applying hand cream right beforehand.

Mistake 2: choosing the wrong size

A sticker that overhangs the edge of your nail or doesn't quite reach it will lift far sooner than one that's sized correctly, since the exposed edge catches on everything from clothing to keyboards. Fix: take the time to size each nail individually rather than assuming one size fits all ten — most hands have at least a couple of different sizes across the set.

Mistake 3: under-curing

If the gel isn't fully cured, it stays soft underneath even if the surface looks set, which means it won't bond properly and will lift early. Fix: cure the full 60 seconds per hand under your UV/LED lamp, and make sure your hand is positioned so the lamp reaches every nail, not just the ones facing directly up.

Mistake 4: not sealing the edges

The free edge — the tip of your nail — takes the most day-to-day impact and is usually where lifting starts first. Fix: run a thin layer of Diamond Top Coat along the tip and underside of the nail after your gellae is cured to lock the edge down and add extra durability.

Mistake 5: water contact too soon

Getting hands wet immediately after application, before the adhesive has had a moment to properly set, can weaken the bond before it's had a chance to fully take hold. Fix: give it a little time after curing before diving into dishes or a hot shower — even twenty to thirty minutes makes a difference.

Frequently Asked Questions

One nail keeps lifting but the rest are fine — why?

That's almost always a sizing or prep issue isolated to that one nail. Check the fit and re-clean just that nail before your next set.

Can I fix a lifting nail without redoing the whole set?

Yes — a thin layer of Diamond Top Coat over the lifted section can reseal it and buy extra days, as long as the lift is small.

Does the shape of my nails affect lifting?

It can. Very short or very curved nail beds sometimes need extra attention to sizing and edge sealing since there's less flat surface for the adhesive to bond to.
